Andy received his degree in mechanical engineering at Sheffield Hallam University, following this he has worked for various large international consultancies where he developed his understanding of the built environment and its requirements. Throughout this time Andy progressed from a Trainee Engineer to a Senior Engineer whilst working on and running his own projects. These ranged from 15,000 seat stadia to new build headquarters and training facilities for the police force. Whilst Andy was working for Jacobs he was the MEP lead for the Building Information Modelling (BIM) team within the UK and he undertook and led several projects utilising the software. In 1986 James started working with a locally renowned Colchester based mechanical services contractor, CH Lindsey and Son, in the drawing office. He worked his way up from Trainee to Senior Mechanical Engineer, passing his ONC, HNC and CED certificates. During this time James’ role was all encompassing around the design and installation of the projects he worked on. This enabled James to learn a valuable lesson of practical design and installation and to appreciate the financial implications to the company if things weren’t installed as originally designed.
After 11 years at C H Lindsey & Son, James moved to Mott McDonald in Cambridge, as a Senior Mechanical Engineer and jumped the fence from contractor to consultant. Whilst at Motts, James undertook work at the Palace of Westminster on various separate projects as well as the detailed design of Thoresby Hall, a large hotel fit-out in a Grade I Listed building for Warner Leisure in Nottingham. To progress his career, James enrolled on a B.Eng. course in Energy Engineering at Southbank University in 1997 and graduated in 2000 with a first-class honours degree.
In 2001 James moved to Maleon as an Associate Mechanical Engineer and worked on many projects in many sectors including commercial office fit-outs, leisure and hotels, education, healthcare, data centres, comms room refurbishments and fitouts. Some of the notable projects worked on include a BP headquarters building in Azerbaijan, American Express headquarters in Rome and Sussex, comms room fit-outs in Dubai, Iraq and Oman. During this period James worked his way up to Director of Maleon, undertaking the day to day running of the business and leading the mechanical department of the business. In March 2018, James left Maleon and joined Hive Consultants as a sub-consultant, becoming a Director in June 2019.
James is married with a teenage daughter and lives in rural Cambridgeshire where he spends his weekends walking his two large dogs and mucking out his wife’s horses. From the age of 15 James has trained in the Japanese martial art of Ju-Jitsu recently obtaining his 5th Dan. He is also a national referee and competition judge as well as a senior coach.
